There’s no doubt that moving anywhere is hard, both emotionally and physically. In addition to the stress of planning, packing up your home and finalizing all the details of your transition, you’re also faced with the emotional realities of leaving your current community, school or job and oftentimes friends and family, too. It’s a lot to take in.
When you’re moving a long distance, the impact of the move is even more pronounced. So while things may be difficult for a little while, your friends at Apex Moving & Storage have put together a list of some tips and tricks to get you feeling better, settling in and making your new place feel more like “home”—as soon as possible.
Maximize Truck Space to Minimize Costs
Moving long distances can quickly become expensive. To make sure that you’re making the most of your moving budget, take the time to maximize your truck space. The easiest way to do this is to pack efficiently. Declutter all of your belongings before you start and toss, donate, gift or sell any and all items that you don’t love or need—they’ll only wind up taking up precious (and expensive!) moving truck real estate. You can also use furniture and containers that you’re already packing to double as moving boxes. Keep light-weight clothing or linens in dresser drawers; fill baskets and plastic containers with items from their respective rooms, or use stray clothes and bedding to cushion fragile items.
Paint and Repair/Replace Major Items Before Moving In
Whenever possible, do as much maintenance and “sprucing up” to your new home before you start unpacking boxes. Not only does the open space making it far easier to paint and install new flooring or accessories, but it’s also a great way to feel accomplished in the midst of your “settling in” to-do list. As a bonus? Right away, the new house can start feeling more like yours as you start putting your personal touch on it.
Embrace the Meltdowns
No matter how great your new house and community may be, a long distance move is a drastic change in anyone’s life. It’s not unusual to feel overwhelmed, apprehensive, or just plain sad sometimes. While these waves of emotion are all but guaranteed, it’s important that you embrace them, let them “get out of your system” and then commit to focusing on all the fun and exciting changes that your move will bring. There’s a lot to look forward to!
